Does sugar accelerate the aging process?

We all know sugar causes weight-gain. Did you also know sugar in any of its forms (corn syrup, cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup, etc.) is known to be damaging to all organ systems?  Understandingly, it accelerates the aging process significantly.

One of the reasons is that sugar suppresses the ability our white blood cells have to do their job of defending our bodies from infections. Sugar is also one of collagen’s natural enemies. 

What is glycation?

High-glycemic carbohydrates such as sugars, breads, starches, potatoes, pastas, desserts and soda) are rapidly converted to glucose in your bloodstream. Glycation is the body’s natural reaction to this overload of glucose. It causes excess sugar molecules to attach themselves to collagen fibers.

When this occurs, fibers lose their natural strength and flexibility which makes skin to become less elastic and more vulnerable to sun damage, lines, and sagging.

Not just skin deep

Furthermore, glycation reactions are actually an active part of most degenerative diseases such as atherosclerosis, cataracts, neurological impairment, and diabetes. In fact, you could say they are at the very heart of the aging process.. Taking the blame for responsible for your wrinkles, heart disease and even disease such as cancer & Alzheimer’s.

What about Acne?

Is there any truth to the claim that the consumption of sugar and other forms of sweeteners are a contribute to the appearance of acne and blemishes? The answer is yes. When our blood sugar and insulin levels rise, whether due to a poor diet (sugary, starchy foods) or from stress, we experience a serious increase in inflammatory chemicals at a cellular level. This surge makes inflammatory diseases – including acne – to worsen dramatically. Also keep ion mind that Cortisol and other adrenal steroids can act as androgens (male hormones) and stimulate the sebaceous (oil) glands resulting in a flare-up of acne.

The bottom line: Avoid all forms of refined sugar as well as chemical artificial sweeteners. Your health will thank you for it.
